Winter Trees

Working in Bronze, Hayward conceived the Winter Trees series after years of observing trees as they lay dormant in both Toronto and New York. Leafless, the trees take on a certain sculptural beauty—their blackness enhanced against the stark sky. These small-scale sculptures, ranging in size from 8 to 20 inches tall, are as varied in their appearance as actual trees. “My intention was to mimic nature to the best of my ability.” The trees are the result of the direct burnout process, while the bases result from a lost wax casting.

Each sculpture is unique and features the artist’s stamp on the underside.
