The ADRIFT series was made over the summer of 2005 when Hayward and his family rented a cottage on the North Fork of Long Island. The series was photographed on film using both 35mm and 6x7 formats. As Hayward tells it. ’The cottage was close to the water and I would load my cameras with film the night before and set my alarm for 5am. The next morning I would make my way down to the beach. Wrapping the camera in a simple plastic bag I would wade in up to my neck and shoot away. I had the rising sun at my back and as soon as it crested over the hills and hit the water I would pack up and try to go back to sleep'.
ADRIFT is Haywards first series shooting water, a subject that continues to inspire and fascinate him.
